Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary East Godavari District Of Andhra Pradesh

Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary is a wildlife sanctuary and estuary situated in Andhra Pradesh, India.  Coringa Wildlife sanctuary is located 18km from the port city Kakinada, on the Kakinada-Yanam state highway, nestling on the deltaic branches of Gouthami and Godavari Rivers at Kakinada Bay.It is located between 16°-30' to 17°-00' N latitudes and 82°-14' to 82°-23'E longitudes.The sanctuary is a part of the Godavari estuary and has extensive Mangrove and Dry Deciduous Tropical Forest.About half of the area is the backwater, which include a sand pit of 18km stretch. The rivers Coringa and Gaderu and their deltic branches intersect the region, along with other water channels. This forms about 335.7 square km of marsh vegetation.


Flora : The Sanctuary in the estuary of river godavari has rich mangrove vegetation.[ At present there are thirty five species of plants belonging to twenty four families.The plant species that are commonly found are Avicennia officinalis, Avicennia marina, Avicennia alba, Excoecaria agallocha, Rhizophora mucronata, Ceriops decandra, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Lumnitzera recemosa, Sonneratia apetala, Rhizophora conjugata, Aegiceras corniculatum, Thespesia populneoides and Hibiscus tiliaceus

Mammals Mangroves provide shelter to a variety of animals. The tree trunk, branches & leaves house the avian fauna, mammals and insects. The soil surface of mangroves is home to Mudskippers, Crabs and Molluscs. The water in the forest supports Smooth Indian Otters, Fishing Cat. The sanctuary has the unique distinction of having an 18 km long sand path in the northeastern side, where Olive Ridley-Sea Turtle nest from January to March every year.

Birds : There are more than 125 species of birds in Coringa including Crested Serpant Eagle, Scarlet Minivet, Indian Roller, Black capped Kingfisher, Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher, White bellied Woodpecker etc. So bird watchers can look forward to a busy and happy time.

Best time to visit  : The month of October to May.

How to reach  Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary 
By Air: Nearest Airport is at Rajahmundry(70 kms). 
By Rail: Nearest railway station is at Kakinada- 20 km.
By Road: It is at a distance of 70kms from Rajahmundry and 20 kms from Kakinada by road. It is well connected by state buses.

The Technology for this project was brought from California In USA . In this Dam 17 hood Siphons, 4 priming siphons were used. Whenever the Water level of the tank exceeds its capacity the siphons System automatically opens. 

This is the speciality of these siphons. The military Governor of Hyderabad Major General Sri J.N. Chowdary has laid the foundation on 15th September, 1949. This Dam was started in the year 1959. Approximately 4000 Acres of Agricultural land has been brought under irrigation through this project.

Somasila Dam Nellore Andra Pradesh
